Quick Overview

The United States Mint began issuing 1/2 ounce $10 gold coins honoring the Nation's First Spouses in 2007. The First Spouse coins are released on the same schedule as the corresponding $1 Presidential coins. The obverse of these coins feature a portrait of the First Spouses, their names, the dates they served as first spouse, the year the coin was issued, as well as the words "In God We Trust" and "Liberty." The reverse design features an image depicting the first spouse's life and work, along with the words "The United States of America", "E Pluribus Unum", "$10", "1/2 oz.", and ".9999 Fine Gold". When a President served without a First Spouse (Jefferson, Jackson, Van Buren, Buchanan), a gold coin was issued bearing an obverse image of Lady Liberty, and a reverse image representing themes from that President's life. Uniquely, the First Spouse coin issued to correspond with 21st President Chester A. Arthur features suffragist Alice Paul, as Arthur was a widower.
